Canterbury School, founded in 1915, is a Catholic coeducational boarding school located in New Milford, Connecticut โ in the rolling hills of the Housatonic River Valley, approximately 75 miles northeast of New York City. Canterbury is one of the few remaining Catholic boarding schools in the United States and maintains a strong tradition of faith, scholarship, and service.
Canterbury enrolls approximately 360 students from over 20 countries. The school's intimate size creates an unusually close community where students develop deep relationships with faculty and classmates. The student-to-faculty ratio is approximately 6:1, and all students live on the 150-acre wooded campus.
The academic program is rigorous and college-preparatory, with a strong emphasis on writing, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity. Canterbury has particular strengths in English, history, and the arts, and the school's chapel program โ while respecting students of all faiths โ creates a reflective, values-centered community that distinguishes Canterbury from many of its peers.
Athletics are a central part of Canterbury life, with the school competing across all major sports in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC). The school's outdoor campus provides exceptional facilities for cross-country, hiking, and nature study.
From New York City, Canterbury is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by luxury SUV โ one of the most accessible New England boarding schools from the city. MyNYSUV provides direct luxury SUV service from JFK, Newark, LaGuardia, and New York City to Canterbury's New Milford campus for all term events and vacation breaks.
